Thirty-one-year-old Kesha Gaskin is the owner of All About You The Spa, a company that offers facials, body scrubs, beach bum facials, vajacials, illuminating brightening treatment, waxing, sugaring, ingrown hair treatments, pedicures, manicures, massages as well as couple’s massages.
The former St James Secondary School student who operates her business in Husband’s St James said that she decided to open a spa after she realized how important touch could be for a patient’s overall healing.
“I was pursuing my career in nursing and while working in an elderly nursing home I met a lady who had just arrived in our care. She was very heartbroken as she was not with her family anymore. Each day I made it my priority to hug her every evening to make her feel loved by us her new family.
Some evenings I would be running late at the end of my day, however, she would be by the exit gate waiting patiently for me to hug her. It showed me how important and beneficial a touch meant and how far it could go to an individual’s overall health and wellness.
“This was what motivated me to pursue a new path to become a massage therapist as my drive is to make my clients feel cared for with my touch,” she said.
Gaskin who has been operating her business for the past
five years said that massages have therapeutic benefits as they could increase circulation, release tension and reduce stress just to name a few.
“Persons think that a massage is only beneficial for helping someone relax which is true, however, it has more therapeutic benefits such as increasing one’s circulation, relieving
tension, relieving anxiety, improving sleep, and promoting relaxation throughout the entire body which leads to additional health benefits.
Whether it is chronic or acute, if someone is tense and in need of a release, or they have been injured and have extensive muscle and or nerve tissue damage that plagues their body, massage therapy might be worth exploring. Massage therapy also triggers lasting feelings of relaxation, improved mood,
and reduced stress levels which improve one’s quality of life,” she said.
The qualified nurse and massage therapist who is currently completing a course in oncology massages for patients and cancer survivors said that becoming an entrepreneur has opened her eyes to the harsh reality that everyone will not support your dream in the same way that you do.
“Not everyone sees or understands your goals and dreams for the business. Everyone is not your friend as they may not want you to succeed, everyone will not support your business because they may not see your value as they do not see the huge risks you have undertaken, the sleepless night, the late nights, and the numerous sacrifices you had to undergo daily,” she said.
In addition, Gaskin said that becoming an entrepreneur has taught her how to become a good listener as well as having patience.
“Becoming an entrepreneur has taught me patience and how to become an excellent listener. Although being an entrepreneur is hard work, every day is worth it. All of my clients deserve 100 per cent commitment to making them feel better,” she said.
The owner of All About You The Spa said her passion for her job and her customers comes from wanting to provide a better life for her son.
“My son is my greatest motivation; I do not want him to struggle or have to fight as hard as I did in life. I am also driven by my clients and the joy they experience from my services. I feel proud knowing that I have brought, comfort, joy, and relief to someone’s life,” she said.
