After they met on the set of Saturday Night Live, Simon and Fisher were inseparable. Eventually, the couple moved in together, and Fisher helped Simon raise his son, Harper. According to her 2008 memoir, Wishful Drinking, Fisher, and Simon shared a strong connection. So, when they discovered that their relationship wasn’t working, neither of them wanted to be without each other. However, she said their problems continued the same day they got married.?
“We once had a fight (on our honeymoon) where I said, ‘Not only do I not like you; I don’t like you personally!’ Fisher wrote. “We tried to keep the argument going after that, but we were laughing too hard.”
During their marriage, Fisher and Simon allegedly dealt with more issues than arguing. According to The Daily Mail, Weller wrote that Fisher got pregnant in 1984. Fisher reportedly had an ectopic pregnancy, when a fertilized egg implants and grows outside the uterus. Ectopic pregnancy can potentially damage nearby organs and possibly lead to death due to the growing issue causing life-threatening bleeding.

In Carrie Fisher: A Life on the Edge, Weller wrote that Simon neglected Fisher after their baby died. While she said the ectopic pregnancy was one of? Fisher’s “greatest heartbreaks,” Simon seemingly had other things on his mind.?
“Paul was very cold to her during this time,” Weller wrote. “He seemed distracted and not thinking of her. She considered what she’d had as a ‘’near-death experience.’ She said Paul was not only unmoved by [what she went through]; he actually appeared to be angry with her about it.”
Fisher and Simon divorced in 1984. Once they finalized their divorce, the couple fell in love all over again. Fisher moved back in with Simon, and they maintained their relationship for several more years. Unfortunately, the couple couldn’t make the romance work. They officially split up, and Simon married Edie Brickell in 1992.

Following their breakup, Fisher shared why the relationship between her and Simon didn’t work. According to Wishful Drinking, Fisher presented Simon with challenges that became too much for him to handle.?
“Poor Paul,” she wrote. “He had to put up with a lot with me. I think, ultimately, I fell under the heading of Good Anecdote, Bad Reality. I was really good for material, but when it came down to day-to-day living, I was more than he could take.”
Fisher died of cardiac arrest in 2016.
