[hottest politicians]‘Des O’Malley knew there were things bigger than politics?– principles that are eternal, truths that

Des O’Malley went out to vote in the Dubln Bay South by-election less than three weeks ago, even though “feeble and very unwell”, former Tánaiste Mary Harney revealed at his funeral mass yesterday.

He insisted on doing so, she told the congregation at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Donnybrook.

“His political instincts were always rooted in what was the right thing to do. He wanted to exercise the franchise, and I suppose that’s the lesson: ‘Please don’t take our democracy for granted.’”

Mr O’Malley, the founder of the Progressive Democrats and a former minister for justice, was to be buried in Renvyle in Connemara with his wife Pat, who died in 2017, the funeral was told.

President Michael D. Higgins attended the solemn obsequies, along with former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and other politicians.

Commandant Brendan McInerney represented the Taoiseach as his aide-de-camp.

The President sympathised with the O’Malley adult children, Catherine, Hilary, Fiona, Desmond, Eoin and Maeve, his sister Denise and brother Joseph.

The requiem was socially-distanced, with 1,500 tuning in to a livestream of the service on the internet.
